Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff, is a new novel from first time book writer Sean Penn. This would be the same Sean Penn from the movies. The 57-year-old actor is trying his hand in the novel game, citing a loss of interest with the film industry. Bob Honey, which is labeled by Penn as a satire, is a funny little bucket of insanity. Based on Penn’s own political motivations, the actor is widely-known for his activism, the book follows a septic tank salesmen passionate for politics. When his letter-writing campaign fails to bear fruit Honey decides to take it out on old people. He becomes a mallet-wielding assassin who rubs out the elderly for the sake of a healthier planet. Although the absurd concept smacks of Pratchett, or even Adams, the political motivations behind it make Honey a bit more serious.
Bob Honey is a somewhat blistering satire that takes aim at many present topics in the U.S. Chief among them the Trump Administration and #MeToo. The digs towards the Trump White House are not even cleverly disguised, as Penn takes a shot at the current president more than once. Penn is notorious for his political leanings however, and everyone is well-aware of his activism. His shots at Trump or more or less expected at his point. The true surprise in Bob Honey is the unflattering look Penn takes towards the #MeToo movement. Women’s rights have been at the forefront all this year, exploding over social media, being rallied at the Oscars, and becoming a talking point for more than one acceptance speech.
Penn blasts the movement over the breadth of six pages, comparing it to a playground brawl rather than an effective medium for change. The commentary has drawn much heat for Penn, but the actor has waved it off. Bob Honey is available now in bookstores across the U.S. According to Penn it will not be his last novel, so more is definitely expected. One this is for certain. Penn will not pull punches when it comes to his opinion.
